Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery
Fellowship Trained in Hip & Knee Replacement Surgery

Dr. Szuszczewicz grew up around the Washington D.C area, in both Maryland and Virginia. He completed his undergraduate degree at the College of William & Mary. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. His post-graduate training included a surgical internship at the University of Colorado and a research fellowship in Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction at Harbor-UCLA. Dr. Szuszczewicz completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency at Tulane University, followed by a clinical fellowship in Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery at the Anderson Clinic in Alexandria, Virginia. It was there that he trained with Dr. Charles Engh who invented the cementless hip replacement, and his brother Dr. Gerard Engh who is one of the pioneers of partial knee replacements.

He has published numerous papers based on work done at Harbor-UCLA, Tulane University and the Anderson Clinic. Based on hip replacement research he did at Tulane, he was awarded the prestigious Charnley Award.

Since Dr. Szuszczewicz has been in practice, he has completed additional training in minimally invasive hip and knee replacement surgery as well as unicompartmental, or partial knee replacement surgery. He continues to be involved in research and education. Dr. Szuszczewicz was one of the first surgeons in the country to start doing anterior minimally invasive hip replacement surgery. He has been doing the anterior approach for almost 20 years. He has helped modify and improve the minimally invasive hip replacement technique, and has designed instrumentation used to facilitate the procedure. He currently teaches other surgeons how to do minimally invasive hip replacement surgery, and is currently designing a femoral stem that will be used in hip replacement surgery in the near future.
